MediSend International Transforms Healthcare in Nigeria, Togo, Papua New Guinea and Haiti07/12/2011
Twelve professionally trained biomedical technicians recently graduated from the MediSend Biomedical Repair Training Program™ and have returned home to elevate standards, implement change and use their newly acquired skills to install, repair and maintain life-saving biomedical equipment in their hospitals.
On Saturday, June 11th, commencement ceremonies took place at the Elisabeth Dahan Humanitarian Center, MediSend International’s global headquarters in Dallas, Texas. Graduates from developing countries participated in a moving afternoon of honors, congratulations and good-byes. The twelve men from Nigeria, Togo, Papua New Guinea and Haiti completed the rigorous and challenging six-month biomedical repair training program that will enable them to return home to become ambassadors for change and to positively impact healthcare in their communities. All were anxious to see home and family, and equally eager to return to their hospitals with the life-saving skills they learned in the MediSend Biomedical Repair Training Program™. The Spring 2011 Program was sponsored by ExxonMobil, International Child Care and Mercy Ships.
There is a critical worldwide lack of professionally trained biomedical technicians. The suffering brought on by poverty and disease in developing countries is exacerbated by this situation. In countries impacted by disaster, such as Haiti, trained professionals are essential in the redevelopment of the healthcare infrastructure.
Dr. Costel Rizescu, VP of Biomedical Technologies, and his team of instructors at MediSend spend every day with the trainees, often working into the evening and on weekends, in both classroom and laboratory environments. As part of the program, visiting Philips Healthcare Training Academy instructors teach certified training courses on Philips equipment used in the MediSend training laboratory. The trainees also experience a professional internship at Baylor Health Care System Hospitals. The internship allows them to work with experienced, practicing biomedical technicians and to employ their newly acquired skills in a hands-on clinical environment.
"Graduation is always bittersweet. The trainees have become family. But we all know, no one better than they, that they are returning to hospitals in desperate need of their skills and professionalism," says Nick Hallack, President and CEO of MediSend International adding, "All of our graduates keep us informed of their progress and have wonderful success stories to convey. MediSend also ensures that the biomedical technicians return to their hospitals with the tools they will need. Each graduate’s hospital receives the MediSend Mobile Biomedical Equipment Test and Repair Kit™, designed to meet the specific needs of developing country hospitals and containing over 4000 test, repair and calibration tools and supply items.
Since its inception in 2006, the MediSend Biomedical Repair Training Program™ has returned 73 BMET certified biomedical technicians to Angola, Chad, Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Sierra Leone, Togo, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Papua New Guinea, India, Haiti and Kazakhstan, many the first such professional technicians in these countries.
A new class of trainees from Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea and Papua New Guinea will arrive at MediSend in July.
