Trainees from Hospitals in Africa Attend MediSend International's Biomedical Repair Training Program03/16/2009
The trainees will return to their countries as certified biomedical technicians with the skills to install, maintain and repair life-saving biomedical equipment.
Trainees from Liberia, Chad, Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria are currently enrolled in the 2009 Spring-Summer Biomedical Repair Training Program at MediSend International's Global Education Center in Dallas, Texas. This is the third year that MediSend has educated and trained qualified biomedical technicians to install, repair and maintain life-saving biomedical equipment in hospitals throughout the world. MediSend's intensive outcomes-oriented, six-month Biomedical Repair Training Program is the first such program to train BMET technicians for developing country hospitals. The requirement to become a BMET is generally the completion of a military BMET program or a two-year Associate's Degree in Biomedical Technologies.
ExxonMobil Foundation funded MediSend’s Biomedical Repair pilot program in 2007, and continues to be a strong and committed supporter of MediSend’s mission to improve healthcare conditions in developing countries. The Foundation is currently sponsoring the students from Chad, Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria. Upon completion of the 2009 Spring-Summer program, the MediSend – ExxonMobil Foundation alliance will have trained over 30 BMET certified biomedical technicians for under-resourced hospitals in five countries in Africa.
The students from Liberia are sponsored by the Zoe-Geh Foundation, an ongoing partner and supporter of MediSend International. Since 2007, the Zoe-Geh Foundation has committed more than $1,000,000 to constructing, equipping and operating a new hospital in a desperately poor area of Liberia.
Each graduate technician's hospital will receive MediSend's Mobile Biomedical Equipment Test and Repair Kit™, the largest and most comprehensive mobile repair lab of its kind. The Mobile Kit, designed to withstand harsh conditions such as temperature, humidity and unstable energy, contains over 4000 laboratory repair tools, supply items and state-of-the-art test and calibration equipment essential to the repair and maintenance of biomedical equipment.
